JH 27- The Huge Sucking Sound You Hear

The Huge Sucking Sound You Hear...

is all the money being vacuumed up and into BRT and the pay raises that the bosses give themselves for this future and current failures. As the company continues to pursue this wasteful project we make only baby steps of progress at the bargaining table. In fact, it seems that we may not making any progress at all. And when you think of the AVS fiasco, the value of accountability that LTD extols seems severely lacking.

So the next time that a supervisor gives you an evaluation and says something like "you know you have missed a few days this year" or "customer service needs some improvement because we got these complaints about you" (and the complaints are most likely bogus or nitpicking) just tell the supervisor that accountability is not important. If it was, then somebody would certainly would have to be held accountable for the AVS problem. Last time I checked all the same managers are still here getting big bucks, even though they blew more than 2 and half million bucks for those dumb blue buses. In fact they got pay raises. So you see accountability is no longer a value at LTD and just tell that supervisor to back off. But then remember there are two sets of rules. The rules for us and then the ones for the bosses. This is the usual way things are around here - good for the bosses and bad for us workers.

Do you think that the last Leadership Council meeting sounded something like this?

HAMMBERT

Stay the course. Screw the workers. Pay yourselves well. Build BRT. Waste money. Keep Hammbert's pay and benefits a big secret. Let Hammbert waste more LTD resources and continue his efforts to drive LTD into the ground!

By the time Hammbert and Pangborn have finished with their plans LTD will stand for Little Transit Demand as you continue to drive ridership into the ground, our bones to dust, and any reputation LTD had, to be changed to extravagant wasters of money. After all, we will be getting 6 new million dollar buses in 2006. Hope they don't catch fire or fail mechanically.

Do you think that the LTD management has considered the following alternatives in keeping with the mission of LTD?
1. Increase regular service and frequencies for primary routes with high productivity. - Nope they cut regular service!
2. Delay BRT until revenues have returned to the same growth levels of prior to the recession.- Nope they are going into debt and sending general fund money over to capital at a record pace.
3. Improve the union worker retirement plan so that LTD is the employer of choice it claims it wants to be. Make a fair settlement offer at the bargaining table. - Are you kidding? Do something morally correct and fair?
4. Consider asking the public by referendum whether they want BRT to be developed. Bet they don't want it. - Not on your life. Public input is never wanted unless the bosses hand pick the players like the BRT Steering Committee.

If anything LTD should just take a big deep breath and step back away from BRT and do the right thing.

Solidarity Forever,
Joe Hill
